Brutal Bangladesh Sweatshops Exposed

We've all heard about the disgrace of sweatshops in Asia and other countries. Until you get first hand news of the horrible conditions in these places, it probably doesn't seem 'real'. Well it is. And it's an ongoing tragedy throughout those countries. Following is an inventory of what Asian women are going through in these situations, specifically in the country of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is a country in South Asia that was formerly known as the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Even though the country has gone through domestic and international efforts to enhance its economic situation, Bangladesh remains an underdeveloped and overpopulated country. For the majority of citizen who live there, the yearly income is only 0Us, and lower still for others.

News From Bangladesh

Bangladesh grows huge quantities of rice, tea and mustard. Although two-thirds of its citizen are farmers, more than three quarters of the country's income come from exports through the garment industry. The 'industry', which employs more than 3 million workers, exports an mean of billion worth of products! 90% of of its employees, or slaves if you will, are Asian women.

Rents are very high in Bangladesh, especially for the factory workers who only earn about Us per month. To try to make ends meet, many of the women in the rural areas trek to the city's sweatshops that offer horrible working conditions. At these sweatshops, the women work in the middle of 10 and 12 hours a day, seven days a week. That's not together with their additional household duties either.

Needless to say, the atrocious working and living conditions take their toll on the condition of these Asian women. As many as 68% of them complain of constant frailness and fatigue which is connected to the long hours of work. The second major question is gastric ulcers which are mainly due to low incomes and irregular eating habits. Chest pain, backaches, eye trouble, headaches and joint pain are other common ailments stemming from their work environment. Asian women working in these horrid conditions are also prone to urinary infections which are a direct supervene of not having adequate way to toilets at work. There are strong restrictions on the amount of times they are even allowed to take bathroom breaks.

Believe it or not, these women have a union. The Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers' and Exporters connection (Bgmea) said factory owners had prepared a master plan to start addressing these awful work-place conditions. That is yet to be seen. Sexual harassment is also very common in garment factories and the women there are threatened with being fired if they say anyone or try to defend themselves. Exploited at work and living in poverty, many of these female workers have turned to prostitution as a way to make some extra money.

All in all, no matter how much you dislike the job you have, you've got to be thankful, at least, that you're not an Asian woman living and working in Bangladesh.

How India Will Outsmart China

Recently an article on the Economist.com showcased two main points. India's large young population, which is the working force and democracy that is comparatively more transparency in the theory and people's power will help it to overtake China in the next few years.

This is not the first time, such seminar have taken place in various forums and debates. Some believe that west is comparing India and China to introduce the fruits of rivalry and competition thus interesting them in themselves so that bourgeois Chinese economy and troops poses no threats to them. While India doesn't even stand close to China in majority of things. Citizen assess the projected future positions of India and China by analyzing the growth rate.

News From Bangladesh

How China is doing good?

China with a large workforce has a procedure of doing things and not just talking. China believes in more doing then just talking. And doesn't listen to those who come in between the plan. Unlike India where villagers and activists have full ownership of protesting against a improvement of a dam or an commercial plant in their area, some are genuine, some do for money, and some do for politics.

Earning friends by helping them with its power, securing deals with other countries. Contribution construction and improvement help in amiable countries has increased the whole image of 'Brand China'. China is prosperous in grabbing the deals and stakes on natural resources much before India. China has been doing good business in Africa whereas India is just beginning now.

What India needs to do?

Optimist predictors believe in the few next years India will be a next China just more friendlier and open. Whereas pessimists believe India has to do a lot and such kinds of comparisons are just a collective advertisement about the greatness of India. When beginning a healthy discussion, one can name a long list of sure points of India which China doesn't have, but one can also name huge list of problems which India has in its theory and society which again China doesn't have or have it very less compared to India.

India needs to have more stronger procedure against corruption and those who corrupt the system. Tackling corruption smartly can help in many ways to decrease the inter linked collective evils of poverty, illiteracy, caste-ism, unemployment and condition problems. Since lots of money spent by the Central government for the welfare of such Citizen sometimes never reaches them and is eaten by others in between.

India needs to improve its road and vehicle network. Majority of sufficient workers, officers waste their time in traffic jams caused by heavy amount of cars and buses plying on the roads with animals and slow interesting cycles and Rickshaws on the same lanes.

Good Foreign relations and foreign procedure is required without disturbing the relations with Russia. Partnership with organizations who are willing to work for the welfare of the poor. If India can spend millions on construction and improvement work in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, of procedure India can spend money for its own development.

Why India Still Attracts?

Like China, India also has huge workforce, cheap and skilled labours, but the major benefit Indians have is the large English speaking population. After America, Citizen wise India is the second largest English speaking country. It sector, software department has been so prosperous that now more and more companies are seeing towards India for outsourcing their business. Unlike China, comparatively, India still needs lots of infrastructure improvement thus giving chance for the foreign investors to engage in such projects. While China's troops and its expansion has an aggressive stance, Indian troops maintains a defensive stance, which has proved to be very useful in earning trust and faith of major countries.

Lalit Modi to Be Sacked From the Position of Ipl Commissioner

In what turns out to be quite unexpected news, sources have revealed that the top officials in the Bcci want Lalit Modi to step down from his position of Ipl chairman. The top officials will hold a meeting on the 23rd of April, to which Ipl franchise owners have also been invited to attend. Lalit Modi will be excluded from this meeting.

The news is scarce at the moment, most of it is being reported as "Sources say, sources reveal... Etc.". But the uncut gist is, however, that Modi apparently is in big time issue now. Apparently Bcci president Shashank Manohar and secretary N Srinivasan are not happy with Modi's functioning, and are planning to move a resolution against Modi. It could either end up in Modi being stripped of most of his powers in the Ipl, or getting rid of him altogether. Amidst all this, Modi has tweeted on his twitter page "Lots in media - speculations. Welcome all investigation - ready to extend all cooperation".

News From Bangladesh

This decision has come has a kind of surprise, inspecting people opinion Modi to be doing well in the Ipl. This shows however, that not all has been going his way, and the up-to-date controversy with the Kochi franchise has only made things worse for him. Some sources say that this sacking is linked to money handling in the Ipl, while others say politics is complicated in this. One thing we can be clear about though, is that Lalit Modi now has as much opportunity of sticking to his place and power as much Kings Xi Punjab have of qualifying this Ipl - which means virtually no chance, anyone he might tweet. Was this decision for the better, or worse? We'll soon find out.

The Black shop in Human Organs

There is an hidden market for human organs worldwide.

Reports have surfaced of Brits willing to sell internal organs to the highest bidder. 60,000 British pounds for a kidney, 20,000 for a liver and 20,000 for a cornea.

News From Bangladesh

The middle men normally touch potential clients via the internet. There are precisely sites where people can post organs for sale. A meeting is then arranged if the client appears willing to go straight through with the procedure.

People who agree to sell their organs may think selling a liver in order to renovate the house. Poor families desperate to send a son or daughter to university, might be equally tempted. One man said he was doing it to buy a home for relatives back in Pakistan.

Even though buying and selling organs is illegal in most countries, there is a successful black market worldwide.

Bizarre though it seems, organ selling has become the way-to-get-ahead for some people. In poorer nations such as the Philippines, Togo and Bangladesh there is a large market in human organs. It is also an hidden trend in the Us, Australia and France.

In China it has a sinister aspect. The authorities have been accused of harvesting the organs of prisoners. Some of the organs were taken from executed prisoners. The British Transplantation community blew the whistle on this institution as evidence accumulated. For example the suspicious speed with which the Chinese were able to furnish organs that matched the needs of patients, suggested that prisoners were being pre-selected prior to their executions. Chinese authorities have admitted that some organs had precisely been harvested from executed prisoners, but claim it took place with permission and in only a small estimate of cases.

There is a big inquire for organs. In the Uk - National health service records show that more than 8,000 Brits are waiting for organ transplants. Fewer than 3,000 procedures are carried out each year. The need is also high in the Us. It is estimated that roughly 10 American patients die each day while waiting for an organ.

I guess finally it's a person's choice, but you have to wonder how the removal of an organ effects the long term health prognosis. A surgeon who was asked about this, said there is one in 3,000 opening of a man who donates a kidney dying after the operation. For a liver it is one in 200.

There is also an ethical concern when the poor begin to feel pressured to sell organs in order to plainly survive. Unfortunately in many countries the lack of enforcement means that these transactions can take place with very small valid scrutiny.

Personally I would rather be poor and all of one piece.

Icc Cricket Ranking: Love It or Hate It But You Can't leave From It

To say that ranking is 'just an additional one amount to me' and 'I don't care about them' is a clichéd statement. But many cricket players use this oft repeated statement whenever a new ranking comes up and they see that they are listed no where among the top. Ranking in any sport be it cricket or tennis is something that many population do not like, but there is no flee from it. Icc cricket rankings are the most widely recognized and thorough rankings in the world of cricket.

Icc also known as the International Cricket Council is the governing body in the cricket world. The game is controlled and administered by this governing body. Icc cricket rankings are widely thorough as official rankings in the cricket field. Icc gives rankings both to countries and personel cricket players. Rankings given to teams depend on two factors. The first factor is the execution of the team in the field and the second factor is the force of the opposing team. This means that if any team wins against a strong opposition like Australia, their ranking can shoot up but if the win is against a low ranked team like Bangladesh, then there may be very exiguous convert in the rankings.

News From Bangladesh

Icc cricket ranking are of assorted kinds. Broadly the rankings are divided in to one day international cricket ranking and test cricket ranking. Under both test cricket ranking and one day international ranking there is country ranking and personel player ranking. Within both the one day and test cricket rankings, players are individually ranked based on their execution and ability. So you can see the list of top ten batsmen, top ten bowlers and the top ten all-rounders in the world. The Icc provides a list of all top 100 players of the game for those who are nothing else but interested in knowing about players those who do not shape at the top ten.

Cricket fans eagerly await the publish of the list of top players and the top playing cricket nation after every major tournament. Players are ranked on a scale of 0 points to 1000 points. Icc cricket rankings takes in to consideration the past execution of a player for giving rankings. So this means that even if a player is not active in the international cricket scene for a long time due to any reason, he can speak his ranking at the top ten based on his former exceptional performances.

Sachin Tendulkar of India is the best example of this. He was not active in the international cricket arena for about four to five months. However due to his consistent execution in the past he was in the list of top twenty players for a long time. The most recent Icc cricket ranking has Australia as the top team for both test matches and one day internationals. Adam Gilchrist of Australia and Shaun Pollock of South Africa are the top ranked batsmen and bowler respectively in the most recent one day international rankings released by the International Cricket Council.

Consequences of Global Warming in Bangladesh

The majority of the land in Bangladesh is either below, at, or barely above sea level. And if it is true that sea levels will rise in the next 40-50 years, then half of Bangladesh will be under water. There are already instances where busy streets and towns near the ocean have been flooded and forced to evacuate. The country faces a huge humanitarian urgency of epic proportions if global warming is not combated.

Millions of refugees from Bangladesh will likely move over borders in neighboring countries India and Myanmar. Not only is Bangladesh rife with environmental catastrophes, the people density of the country is the highest in the world. Production it an incredibly lethal and deadly composition that will not only impact Bangladesh but all of South Asia and Southeast Asia for many generations forward.

News From Bangladesh

According to Uc Davis, practically 75 million (half) of Bangladesh's people would emigrate due to sea level rise.

Whether global warming is occurring as a ensue of human involvement is something that is currently being debated among politicians but hardly being argued by scientists. The majority of scientists have come to a windup on global warming and man's impact on it. And they all claim that something needs to be done and in a hurry.

It currently seems like there is a major turn over among scientists but that is in general due to the fact that the media has to gift both sides of an argument, either or not one side has a miniature bit of backing or not. There are currently a very miniature number of resources available online to substantiate the claims made by scientists and allow the buyer to decide for him or herself.

Migrant Labour - A contemporary Version Of The Slave Trade?

The cheap labour model that has driven the economies of most of South East Asia, China and other nations may be running out of breath. Twelve habitancy jumped off buildings at a positive factory's facilities in Shenzen (two survived however) exposing problems associated to ill treatment, mismanagement of staff, forces style training and a no nonsense corporate culture. Production line workers, together with pregnant women were forced to stand for eight hours on their jobs while not having time to retell with friends and sustain nests. Withholding of wages, locking away of personal documents etc etc. Are some of the abuses. Pay cuts and longer working hours are held out to these so as to reaming them that their jobs are at the mercy of the Boss.

Nine million Filipinos work abroad as migrant workers. an additional one four million, mostly from India, work in the Gulf region. The new global meltdown has driven sixty million habitancy below the poverty line worldwide. Twenty million migrant workers have lost their jobs in China alone. It is estimated that about eighty million migrant workers have crossed borders in search of jobs in the middle of China and South East Asia alone.

News From Bangladesh

One looming demand over all this is what will happen if these millions lose their jobs, expelled or thrown out of work in an additional one economic crunch? What about again about their remittances to their home countries which have come to be a big source of wage for countries such as the Phillipines and Bangladesh also propping up their families and households? A gnawing fear is, if and when an additional one downsizing slits the throats of economies will these workers have jobs to hang on to? Can they just stay afloat in the labour markets of their host countries? Will they be allowed to stay on, or will they turn to crime or come to be powder kegs of social unrest?

The story of both immigrants and migrant labour is: freedoms. Financial and personal freedoms. It's easy to feel snug and comfortable for the others who are citizens. But any day, anyone of us can be caught up like an antelope in a net as economies are battered. Here's one preventive step, a preemptive charge if you care to call it.

To your future,
Cally Rao

Cricket World Cup 2007

Calypso Cricket has long thrilled fans with its cavalier approach to an often unnecessarily involved gentleman's game. 'Why find a gap in the field when you can just hit over the top,' argued West Indian great Sir Vivian Richards. Likewise, as a spectator sport, cricket in the Caribbean has all the time been a world apart. It is best described as a 'lively party' painted with colour and equipped with seasoned conches, drums and varied other instruments to add to the rhythmic flavoured day. Just imagine, in Australia even beach balls are confiscated upon entrance; in Barbados, ushers guide 'loud' fans to mounds where arresting spectators and Djs are jamming to calypso and soca chutney.

Hosting cricket's showcase event is an stupendous task for any nation, let alone a region as determined as the West Indies.

News From Bangladesh

"Ten years ago if you said that nine governments would integrate to pass legislation for the World Cup, and that this scale of construction would happen, citizen would have said you were mad. Since the 1930s we have taken cricket in the Caribbean for granted but now we have the chance to change the game for ever. We have spent more than 0m and used it to overhaul everything. It has been a remarkable exercise." -Chief executive of the World Cup, Chris Dehring

Whether Dehring's enthusiasm translates to a smoothly run tournament is a matter of some concern for an anxious cricket public. One thing is for determined though, when the tournament opens in Jamaica on March 13th, any speculation about the fate of the 2007 Cricket World Cup will fade away seamlessly into the rhythm of the diverse crowd as all eyes focus on that shiny red ball.

Preview

So, who will win the 2007 World Cup? Well...

1. Australia

Prediction: Champion

The reigning World Cup holders are in ominous form. They secured the Champions Trophy in India in November, then trounced England and New Zealand at home. Their belligerent on-field approach has won them some critics, but it's also won them a lot of tight matches. Captain Ricky Ponting is a tactical expert who knows how to choke opposition teams. Wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist is capable of destroying potent attacks, Brett Lee has matured into a devastating one-day bowler, and Michael Hussey has built a reputation as a clinical finisher. World domination never gets old for this mob. Reason enough to keep them very safe.

Player to watch: Andrew Symonds

An electrifying exponent of the contemporary game, Symonds is a dread-locked, zinc-lipped expert - look for his middle-order mayhem with the bat. Symonds is more than handy with the ball too. He can bowl either darting off-spin or probing medium-pace, and his fielding is quite simply the finest in world cricket.

2. South Africa

Prediction: Semi-Finals

South Africa remains a well-drilled unit, with an experienced top shelf. Captain Graeme Smith heads a talented batting line-up that relies on the stroke-making of Jacques Kallis and Herschelle Gibbs. Throw in two tough all-rounders in Justin Kemp and Andrew Hall, plus the bouncy Makhaya Ntini, and most sides will find them hard to keep out.

Player to Watch: Mark Boucher

Vice-captain Mark Boucher is a stupendous lower order batsman, and a world-class glovesman who marshals an perfect fielding side. The 30-year-old thrives in difficult situations, but can also accelerate an innings at the death. If called upon, he rarely fails.

3. Pakistan

Prediction: Semi-Finals

Coach Bob Woolmer will be looking for consistency from his fresh-faced Pakistan side that showed promise on 2006 tours to South Africa and India. Only the much-maligned captain Inzamam-ul-Haq remains from the star-studded 1992 World Cup winning side, but key batsmen Younis Khan and Mohammed Yousuf (currently rated #1 in the world) are a formidable middle-order presence. Plus young speedster Mohammed Asif has emerged as a big wicket taker. If the chance batsmen can settle, then Pakistan will authentically threaten the big boys.

Player to Watch: Shoaib Akhtar

Pakistan's chances of World Cup glory were given an stupendous boost recently when speed demon Shoaib Akhtar had a two-year ban for steroid use lifted by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Love him or hate him, the high-flying playboy is a proven match-winner. He has sheer pace and a mysterious ability to reverse swing the ball. If fit and firing, Pakistan will go a long way.

4. New Zealand

Prediction: Semi-finals

A one-day expert side, the Black Caps are a tenacious defensive team, with enough firepower to cause upsets. The bowling strike boasts a world-class spinner in Daniel Vettori who has developed into a fine artist of flighted left-arm orthodox, the rejuvenated paceman Shane Bond, and underrated seamer Mark Gillespie. Captain Stephen Fleming fronts a flexible batting line-up, with a lower order full of dash. If the top order can shake off a tendency to self-destruct, then New Zealand will take advantage of their weak grouping.

Player to Watch: Jacob Oram

Oram is crucial to his team's balance. A muscular left-handed batsmen, he has resurrected countless Black Caps' innings with a composition of power and grace. Importantly, Oram also bowls useful medium pace, which enables the Kiwi selectors to contain other expert batsmen, or promising spinner Jeetan Patel. An injury-free Jacob Oram holds the key for New Zealand.

5. West Indies

Prediction: Super 8'S

The host nation can rarely be discounted in a major tournament, and the West Indies are the kind of team to win it just for kicks. Or at least they used to be. This current crop has talent, inconsistency continues to baffle their legion of frustrated fans. The ever-present Brian Lara will make one last hurrah, but it's the chance pair of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle who could well dictate how far the team progresses. Jerome Taylor is developing quickly as a strike bowler, and Ian Bradshaw has a good one-day record, but the West Indies lack frontline bowlers to keep opposition batsmen in check. Given an all-round team operation though, and who knows what home ground advantage might bring?

Player to Watch: Dwayne Bravo

Bravo is exactly what the West Indies have been looking for - a genuine, athletic all-rounder. Bravo made a huge impression on debut in England in 2004, and hasn't looked back since. An attacking though technically astute middle order batsmen, and a deceptive medium-pace bowler, Bravo has injected some timely enthusiasm into Caribbean cricket.

6. India

Prediction: Super 8's

Expectation weighs heaviest on Team India, and their form is often harder to gauge than a winter monsoon. Yet coach Greg Chappell seems to have turned them colse to in up-to-date months, with axed captain Sourav Ganguly returning to the fray as an chance batsmen, and poster boy Sachin Tendulkar enjoying yet other purple patch. But scoring runs has never been India's problem; stopping runs has proven harder. Harbajan Singh and Anil Kumble give them attacking slow bowling options, but the conditions in the Caribbean won't suit their sharp turn. Likewise pace duo Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar are too erratic to commonly issue the world's best top orders. If India tighten up in the field though, don't allowance the sleeping giant.

Player to Watch: Ms Dhoni

The glamour boy of Indian cricket, Ms Dhoni gets the crowds jumping, the girls swooning, and the selectors licking their lips. The long-haired wicketkeeper is also a punishing middle-order batsman as he proved in both Sri Lanka and Pakistan in 2005.

7. Sri Lanka

Prediction: Super 8's

The 1996 World Champions have done well to stay competing after a golden era. This well-coached, flamboyant side continues to furnish impressive results. Their solid away narrative is due to batting depth, sharp fielding, and a integrate of star bowlers, namely world-record wicket taker, Muttiah Muralitharan and veteran leftie, Chaminda Vaas. With Jayawardene as an uncompromising, determined captain, and stalwart slasher Sanath Jayasuriya still getting his team off to a flying start with the bat, look for Sri Lanka to cause a few serious headaches.

Player to Watch: Lasith Malinga

This fiery fast bowler has been a revelation for the small island nation. His round-arm performance leaves batsmen with petite time to sight the ball, and his reputation for toe-crunching yorkers and searing bouncers has cricket fans lining up to see him play. Malinga is sure to relish the West Indian pitches too, so look for him to make a real impact at World Cup 2007.

8. England

Prediction: Super 8's

The tragedy of international one-day cricket, England has won only a handful of matches in the past two years. Conservative and short-sighted selections haven't helped the cause, such as the latest Australian tour which saw three players in their mid-30's make their debut. There are some positives though, namely the brave stand-in captain Andrew Flintoff and dashing batsman Kevin Pietersen. The return of opener Michael Vaughan will make an stupendous divergence too, as will the continued improvement of cagey spinner Monty Panesar and swing bowler James Anderson.

Player to Watch: Kevin Pieterson

The out-and-out star of English cricket, charismatic Kevin has rocked the establishment with his natural aggression and suited stroke-making. Pietersen has the confidence to lead from the front, and without him England are a timid and miserable bunch. When he's in the mood though, there are few great exponents of the art of batting.

Chinese Economy: China's vigor Worry

For a long time, the Chinese cheaper is growing at an superior pace and I think no other cheaper saw so much expansion in the last 10 years like the Chinese economy. This increase has taken China into a new level in the world politics. Now China is gradually being recognized as a huge economic power by rest of the world. However, this increase means that Chinese cheaper is keen more and more fuels like oil, gas and coal. This matter is becoming a growing concern not just for the Chinese cheaper but for the rest of the world too. As a effect of the Iraq War and destabilizing condition in Middle East the price of oil has remained a cause of concern for the last 2-3 years and the growing question for Chinese cheaper can only make matters worse.

Much of the time for the last one decade Chinese Gdp experienced nearly duplicate digit increase rate. This way, Chinese cheaper has turned into the world's fourth largest now. If the current trend continues after 2-3 decades the Chinese cheaper will emerge as the largest. This means that Chinese cheaper will consume more energy in time to come too. The rest of the world is finding at China now to see what the country is doing to address this issue. China has already become the second largest importer of oil. This sounds to be astounding because only 2 decades ago Chinese cheaper hardly needed any imported oil.

News From Bangladesh

After the increase of Chinese Gdp started at a duplicate digit the question for oil increased and gradually Chinese cheaper needed more and more imported oil. an additional one hypothesize for the increase in question of oil is the fact that the estimate of cars in the Chinese road is addition in a huge pace. In the past, China was a role model for its use of bicycles. This increase in question for oil coupled with the rising price of oil in the world store in the last one decade for a assorted estimate of reasons. To meet the growing demand, China is going after securing supplies from oil fields from assorted parts of the world. At the same time, since Chinese cheaper is on a ride, China can afford to buy oil at a slightly higher price than other countries. The main concern for the procedure makers in China now to find an alternate to oil as the global oil retain is diminishing at a fast pace.

China is actively pursuing the amelioration of alternative sources of energy. China has a huge retain of coal and Chinese procedure makers are now focusing on development the best use of its coal mines. A immense initiative has been taken to citation gas from coal. If this scheme can become prosperous then many Chinese cars would run with gas instead of oil. Gas extracted from coal will also work as source of energy for the power plants. an additional one option is hydro electricity and China is aggressively pushing it. Roughly all the major rivers of Asia have originated in China. However, this plan can face stiff resistance from other countries who are in downstream.

China's worry for energy only reminds us of the fact that we have become too much dependent on oil and if we do not give sufficient significance to finding alternative sources for energy then the time to come is very bleak nothing else but not just for the Chinese cheaper but for the world cheaper as a whole. The time has possibly come for us to become desperate for developing alternative sources of energy.

Scenario Of Apparel Export Of Pakistan

Pakistan has attained a creditable position in the world because of its large scale textile industry. It ranks fourth in the output of cotton and ranks third in the consumption of cotton in Asia. The share of cotton export is 60% of total export of Pakistan. The government of Pakistan has advanced the detach ministry of textile commerce in the year 2004 after the superior operation of commerce in the area of Apparels.

Right now it seems that Pakistan Textile commerce is in a stagnant condition. The higher output costs have brought about this regress. Because of the internal competition with other industries the output cost goes high, and the higher cost weakens the conditions of the Pakistan export shop in the international market. Exports of Pakistan textiles are not praise-worthy in comparison with those of Bangladesh, China and India. The figures of apparel export of Pakistan, China, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to the Us in the first half of the year 2006 are shown in the following chart.

News From Bangladesh

The apparel export rates of China are higher than its other South Asian competitors. The apparel export made by China is at .80 per quadrate meter, by Bangladesh is at .17 per quadrate meter, by Pakistan is at .94 per quadrate meter and by India is at .85 per quadrate meter.

The decrease is seen in the rates of apparel export by Pakistan. The apparel export rates of Pakistan were .80 per quadrate meter in the first half of the year 2005 and it declined by .94 per quadrate meter in the first half of the year 2006. It is -6.72%. In the area of export of knitted clothing of Pakistan to Eu is lower than China while the first half of year 2006. The export rate of knitted clothing for India is at 14.08 euros per kilo, for China is at 11.92 euros per kilo, for Bangladesh is at 8.17 euros per kilo and for Pakistan is at 7.46 euros per kilo.

The increase has been seen in the knitted clothing rates of Pakistan exports in European Union. In the old year it was -10.59% but in this year it reached to 4.66%. In the first half of the old year the export rate of woven clothing of Pakistan was -4.01 but it is 8.12% in the first half of this year so the increase of 0.34% is seen.

Karachi is main contributor in the economy of country by sharing 67%, though it lacks singular commercial area. This gives negative corollary to the industry. Along with it also lacks proper roads and sewage systems. The services like electricity, gas and water cost more than other areas and also lacking the recycle plants of waste products. Industries get water provide through tankers which cost high so it directly affects the output cost.

Floods and Bangladesh - The Reasons

Bangladesh has a good connection with floods. Almost every year while monsoon, due to heavy rainfall and few other reasons floods occur in Bangladesh. But what is the reckon behind them?

Geographical Location and Condition: Bangladesh, the largest Delta of the world, is situated on the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta. Many other Rivers and tributaries are flowing into the Bay of Bengal. The flooding results with the outburst of riverbanks of Bangladesh are tasteless and severely affect the landscape and Bangladeshi society.

News From Bangladesh

Climate: Bangladesh falls under tropical monsoon atmosphere zone and is one of the wettest in the world. Colse to 1,525 mm of rain is observed in a year, and areas near the hills explore Colse to 5,080 mm. Most rains occur while the monsoon (June-September) and wee in winter (November-February). This heavy rainfall twins with "Farakka Dam" on the Ganges causes the flood to occur Almost every year.

Controlling the normal flow of the Ganges: The Ganges got the birth from the Himalayas and crossed India and Bangladesh towards the Bay of Bengal. India is controlling the quarterly flow of the Ganges. while drought they are not allowing a normal water flow of the Ganges towards Bangladesh using "Farakka Dam". As a consequent the Padma (Bangladesh quantum of the Ganges) losses its quarterly flow or current causing mud to fall on its route to lessen the depth of the Padma. Now while the rainy season with the huge growth of water level in the Ganges India must publish a high volume of water straight through 'Farakka Dam' causing the Padma to overflow. Bangladesh Inundates under water.

Increase in world temperature: There are a lot of reasons causing world temperature going high. This influences the ice to melt and the sea level to increase. The Himalayas doing the same and causing the water level of the Ganges go higher and inundates quantum of Bangladesh Almost every year.

Deforestation: Deforestation in the Himalayas is aggravating floods in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. When the Himalayas were covered in woods the case of heavy floods was seen twice in a century in Bangladesh. With the deforestation in the Himalayas the average became once in four years.

o 19th century: Six major floods- 1842, 1858, 1871, 1875, 1885
o 20th century: Eighteen major floods- 1987, 1988, and 1995 were of catastrophic consequence.

For the reference I want to supply here some headlines of several medias about flood in Bangladesh.

o ''Bangladesh in grave danger: deforestation in Himalayas aggravating floods.'' (Bangladesh Observer, 2 June 1990)
o ''When the Himalayas were covered in trees, Bangladesh suffered a major flood about twice a century; one every four years is now the average.'' (Unep 1992)
o ''The severe floods in eastern India and Bangladesh are not the consequent of a natural disaster, but of a ruthless exploitation of wood which has been practiced over centuries in the forests of the Himalayas.'' (Basler Zeitung, 15 September 1998)

So these are the most productive reasons that causing flood in Bangladesh.

Plight of the Garment Workers in Bangladesh

Exploitations of market workers are not new in our country, it is been happening for decades. Guided by the lust of more profitability the owners of the industries exploit their workers by giving less wages, deny overtime payments, deprive them of bonuses and even no payment of salaries, finding no other alternative to comprehend their payments and demands the workers in many occasions in the past assault their industries, demonstrated in the installation premises and on the streets. In most of the cases they were resisted brutally by the hired goons or law enforcing agencies in which hundreds workers were injured some, died even.

Exploitation of garment workers by the installation owners is the continuation of the process in which garment workers are paid the bottom wages in the world. The work shift per day is twelve hours a day instead of eight as recognized by Ilo, in many garments-factories overtime payment is not allowed, even monthly salaries are not paid in time. Safety arrangements in many factories are approximately absent due to which many workers had to die while fire breakout.
In a number of such incidents inquiry committee were formed to explore into the root cause or to find out the solution. Still, the process of violence, exploitations, demonstrations and attacks on the workers continue.

News From Bangladesh

Despite tripartite bargain between the government, installation owners and workers that provides for appointment letters, regular payment of wages and overtime by the first week of every month, maternity leave among other things, these factories also do not abide by the minimum wages as decided upon a commission, ignoring the decision of the commission clearly indicates the arrogance of owners and their powerful connection, to manipulate. With their art and evil ability they could with held the payment of workers for months. The modern garment workers unrest at Uttara (in Dhaka) resulted from no payment of wages to the workers for three months. When the workers took to the streets demanding payments of their wages they were brutally handled by the members of law enforcing agencies in which hundreds of workers were injured and one female worker died. The police have lodged cases against hundreds of garment workers while the installation owners remain untouched despite violating the agreement.

The garment industries of Bangladesh remain the lifeline of the country in terms of employment providing and earning of foreign transfer for the country. The sector flourished on the strong foundation of availability of precisely trainable hard working cheap labour force in plenty. The installation owners took the advantage of this, they employed them with less than one thousand take a a month wage denying approximately all other benefits. Twelve-hour shift was in custom in approximately all garment factories defying the international code of eight hours a day shift. Since most of the workers are uneducated and female they were ignorant about the labor laws and their rights. The owners in most of the factories did not issue any appointment letters to their workers. So, despite working for months and years they remained outsides in the factories officially and thus were deprived of all benefits and ownership as installation workers.

Taking the advantages of workers' poverty and ignorance the owners forced them to work in unsafe and unhealthy work place overcrowded with workers beyond capacity of the installation floor and improper ventilation.
In approximately all factories musclemen were deployed to check any movement by the workers to comprehend their legitimate demand. Whenever in the past the workers raised their voice for payment of their overdue salaries, payment for overtime or demanded festive-bonus, they were assaulted by the musclemen in the installation and were threatened with dire-consequence. The workers were stopped at the entry and were not allowed in. When they asked for their salaries, they were refused to be recognized as the installation workers as they had no appointment letters issued by the installation management.

Because of the carelessness of the installation administration and for their arrogance installation doors used to be kept locked for Safety calculate defying act. So, when fire breakout in obvious garment factories placed on the upper floors of Multistoried buildings, the workers were trapped in the building as the exits were locked. Many workers had to die due to such incidents and hundreds were injured. Yet with their power and connections the owners succeeded in locating their garment factories at the upper floors of Multistoried buildings.

Since the garment workers have come from poorer section of the habitancy they have no other place to go or to switch over to any other profession, they kept the garment industries operative with their sweat and blood.
Despite so many fire incidents in the Multistoried garment factories they still work risking their lives to keep the commerce running. Defying heavy rain, flood and scorching heat the garment workers attend their duties regularly to articulate the yield agenda and export shipments in time.

In many occasions these workers have to work extra hours beyond the twelve-hour shift to ascertain the timely shipment, yet they do not get the payment in time. And when they interrogate payments, they are paid with abuses and physical torture and many more by a section of installation owners.

Though the garment workers in many occasions have been denied of appoint-letters and were not recognised as the registered workers, were projected to the importing countries as the main contributor to the sector to get extra advantage in terms of quota and free access. They claim that any adverse consequent on garment sector of the country will turn most of female garment workers into sex workers. So, for the humanity sake extra notice should be given to the Bangladesh garment products inspecting the interest of the female garment workers. Such lobbying has been done in many occasions in the past and still continuing. Association of the installation owners in the past succeeded in managing distinct concessions for the garment sector of Bangladesh which were enjoyed by them holding the workers away as the consequent of which the installation owners and exporters come to be richer from rich while the workers from poorer.

The wage the garment workers get at the end of the month is the bottom in comparison with same of any other country of the world. With this earnings they cannot contribute the essential food and protection to the house members, schooling and medical hold are approximately luxury for them. Inspire of working for the whole month when they are denied timely and full payment, they turn furious and damage properties.

Instead of taking brutal operation on the garment workers the authorities implicated should take efficient measures to ensure the timely payment of the workers in full. The authorities implicated should also take operation to abide by the terms and conditions of the bargain formulated by the commission, both the parties to ensure peace and productivity in the garment sector of the country.

Manipulations and exploitations of all sorts must come to an end. Any action, which may disturb the working environment of the sector, should not be allowed to occur, even if occurs accidentally or by any occasion should be placed fast by the authorities and parties implicated before transforming into violence.
