What Happens When the Ocean's Water Level Rises?

The rise of water levels in our oceans is mainly due to the increased temperatures throughout the world caused by the supervene of global warming, due to the gases such as carbon dioxide destroying the layer of ozone which protects the earth from the sun's superior rays.

Although there are other reasons. Global warming has also caused the ice caps to melt, and as these melt into the water the sea's volume becomes larger and therefore increases the sea level.

News From Bangladesh

Such places where the ice is beginning to melt are the glaciers in Greenland and the Arctic. But scientists are of the plan that thermal expansion is the most indispensable factor.

Scientists have found that the global mean sea level will rise by three millimetres (this assessment was made by the Ipcc the intergovernmental Panel on climate Change). This rise is foreseen, to increase, and by the end of the century the world's mean global sea level could rise by whatever from twenty eight to forty three millimetres.

The assessment varies from place to place due to the separate land deposits and form of the sea bed which could also change the sea-level.

A rise in water will originate many problems for the coastal life, this includes not only the wildlife but the population who live there.

The dangers that they face could contain wave attack and flooding which can be caused by a rise in the sea level. One such place that could maybe suffer such dangers is Bangladesh. Any sea level rise could cause this area to be submerged.

The ecological aspects that could arise from sea level rises could well be a large discount in fresh water due to pollution and its increased salinity, production it too salty to be drunk without filtration. This could also influence crops and cattle which would supervene in a decrease of local resources and could make it harder for growing crops. Together with the added fact that over two thirds of the country's population works in the agricultural sector harvesting plants for export to earn money.

Rice is the main crop grown over Bangladesh, a sea level rise could devastate this industry. Rice is its main export and the yield would be greatly reduced due to lack of ready land.Over half the population rely on the local commerce for their survival.

Fishermen who farm shrimps would advantage from an increase in sea water on their land. Shrimps need salt water to live and with an increase in salinity the water would reach the required levels for an increase shrimp farming. This would of course contribute job vacancies and there would be more opportunities for population who farm shrimps.

Most population living in rural areas make their living from the sea. Approximately, that is one million fisherman work who full time and eleven million work part time. However these figures take into catalogue fresh water fishing, and with the salinity increase, sea fish could come to be a smaller resource.

The group implications for population who live by the coast, means that they would have to move out of their homes in order to continue working and to find new homes. With many population engaging at the same time this could originate major problems, particularly with the estimated one million population that would have to be moved due to the possibility of floods.

It is prominent to take into catalogue that if no action is taken, then an area such as Bangladesh could of course lose thirteen percent of it's land due to flooding from sea level rises. This would cause a estimated thirteen million population that would need to be re-homed.

An environmental issue due to the increase in sea levels could be the salinity increase of the soil and rivers at the coastline, which would make the area approximately inhabitable production the land's soil too salty. An increase in salt water would greatly influence the survival of the animal life and freshwater fish.
